Certainly energy consumption in the US is high, but also consider per capita energy consumption in Canada - even higher than the US, due to similar high living standards, cold climate, long distances, etc.

Cold temperatures are one thing but, energy consumption is high due to a number of other factors. Primary industries like metal refineries and pulp processing are major consumers of energy that fuel the worlds secondary manufacturers. Not to metion a relatively sparsely populated area where transportation links span the continent to supply fresh food.
