Mario Teran, a Bolivian army sergeant, shot dead Che Guevara after he was captured in Bolivia's eastern lowlands.

Cuban media reported news of the surgery ahead of the 40th anniversary of Che's death on 9 October.

Mr Teran had cataracts removed under a Cuban programme to offer free eye treatment across Latin America.

The operation on Mr Teran took place last year and was first revealed when his son wrote to a Bolivian newspaper to thank the Cuban doctors for restoring his father's sight.

If I were the doctor, I doubt my hand would have been as steady. In this case, one must admire the doctor's adherence to his oath. What a pity that such spirit seems lacking in much of N. America's sickness industry.

Ah well, perhaps my just finishing Michael Palmer's Miracle Cure has rendered me more cynical.

No one is claiming the Cuban doctors knew of the fact that he had executed Che Guevara when the operation took place.

The point of this story is not forgiveness - you're quite right, jeff, they likely didn't know. The beautiful irony (IMO) is that Che's executioner ended up benefiting from the very legacy - the legacy of selfless internationalism - which he (on behalf of the Bolivian regime and the CIA) had tried to strangle at birth.

I think it's wonderful. It's poetic justice.

Here is an article from the Bahama Journal by a Bahamian physician who rather enthusiastically describes the massive scope of Cuban free medical assistance to the Bahamas and other countries of the Caribbean.
