The American military — once a staunch supporter of President Bush and the Iraq war — has grown in creasingly pessimistic about chances for victory.

For the first time, more troops disapprove of the president’s han dling of the war than approve of it. Barely one-third of service members approve of the way the president is handling the war, ac cording to the 2006 Military Times Poll.

Just as telling, in this year’s poll only 41 percent of the military said the U.S. should have gone to war in Iraq in the first place, down from 65 percent in 2003

Jeff, I'm sure you're aware of this already but there are some troops who have been doing mini anti-war videos/audios anonymously, obviously. I think this is a great sign. I'm sure that many of the men and women fighting there have no idea why they are there. I am also positive that many more are afraid to come forward and admit they want out, and why. I'll try to find the link the the actual video/audio commentary from the troops when I can locate the e-mail it came in.

What, exactly, has been gained by the deaths of 3000 US troops, and the huge numbers of US wounded, and the financial burden the Iraq invasion has laid on the US and the UK? (not to mention the hundreds of thousands of deaths of Iraqi civillians and the destruction of their country, and the costs to other countries such as the UK participating in this carnage) Will the US have access to Iraq oil - which is likely the real reason for the invasion?

God, I hate the US today.

Halliburton stock is through the roof. That's all the justification that these criminals need. They made money! It's already a success as far as they're concerned.

This article is also of interest:

About Face - The Nation

Keep in mind that it was the anti-war movement within the US military that finally brought the Vietnam War to its end. By 1970 resistance to the war within the military was spreading to the point that operations were being hampered and reliability of the troops was in question. It tooks years to rebuild the military afterward. Many of today's officers are keenly aware of this and is one reason why a number of them opposed this war from the start.

Democracies should not have all professional militaries. The bulk of the troops should be conscripts. If this were the case the Iraq and Afghan wars would be long over.
