to the Americans, presenting a national security threat.

oilsands

quote:
Waxman's letter, written to a Senate committee chairman, clarifies Section 526 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

That section bans the U.S. government from entering into a contract for fuel produced from non-conventional petroleum sources, such as the oilsands or coal to liquid fuel conversion, unless they produce less greenhouse gas than conventional sources.

Since it came into force, the law has caused confusion....
Dan Woynillowiez, a climate change expert at Alberta's Pembina Institute, said Waxman's letter should serve as a warning to the province.

the political savvy Saudis are using the distinction of oilsands oil as unconventional as leverage (along with military bases in their country) to pressure the US to continue consuming thier cleaner petrol products.

It is a minority in the US who want to make buying oilsands petrol contingent on lowered GHG emissions. And right now they have no traction for being more than a minority.

Even the bulk of politicicans who take climate change action seriously have zero interest in the US needing to import more oil from Venezuela and Saudi Arabia rather than Canadian oil, however that is produced.

Its a vain hope that a serious threat of the Americans doing this will force Canada and Alberta into action.
