Where is Jack Layton? This would be a perfect opportunity for him to come out swinging at Martin over human rights in China.

For those less interested in opportunism than in honouring Mr Zhao, this would be a perfect thread for us to speak of our admiration of him.
All honour to Mr Zhao, and may his courageous stand continue to inspire his compatriots and democrats around the world.

MP's Zhao tribute miffs Martin shows Paul Martin is only concerned about being upstaged, because he didn't think of it himself, so he's crying about it. As for Jack Layton, he criticized the PM for not doing enough to make Liberals vote for same- sex legislation.
Funny, I thought MPs were elected by their constituents, not Paul Martin.PM dared to call election Layton should shut up and worry about his own party, and butt out of how the Liberals decide to vote on this issue. He has no business telling the PM in ordering the Liberals how to vote, especially since his party is the fourth choice party in Canada at the moment.

Barcode, I know that you started this thread, but you are already causing thread drift and redundancy in it.
There are MANY other threads running on the subject of SSM. This is the only thread concerning Mr Zhao's death and reactions to it. Perhaps we could keep to that topic?
Do you have thoughts of your own about Mr Zhao, Barcode?

Yes...I think Zhao was a very brave person, considering what he was up against. Unfortunately, he didn't get enough support from within his own country, or outside of China. It might have sent the message to the hardliners in Beijing that the Chinese people's wishes should take precedence over what the Communist Party wants. Communism is really about control more than anything else. If they truly cared about the people of their country, they would allow for a free exchange of ideas, and allow other political parties who may have opinions that differ from their own. Zhao was simply ahead of his time, if you look at how China is slowly moving away from Communism in terms of their economy. The coverage of his death in the Chinese media is disgraceful, but not surprising since the hardline Communists are in control. Thank God media outside of China gave his death more attention.
