(Madrid) A radio station owned by Spain's bishops has apologized to Spain and Bolivia for alleging that Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was a Communist and that he was was organizing an axis that would include Cuba and Venezuela.

An on air personality at Cope Radio, pretending to be Zapatero, called the incoming president of Bolivia, Evo Morales to try to implicate him in the bogus report.

After congratulating Morales on his election victory the broadcaster said, "We are sincerely happy that you are triumphantly joining the new order that we wish to set up in Spain and Latin America, Evo."

Cope is owned by the Spanish Bishops' Conference, which has been on a campaign to discredit Zapatero following the passage of same-sex marriage legislation.

[...]

Following the Cope broadcast both Spain and Bolivia made formal complaints to the Vatican. Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos summoned the Vatican's envoy to Spain for a dressing-down and a demand that the bishops prevent anything similar happening again.

The bishops have remained silent, but late Friday Cope issued a statement apologizing "to the people and institutions affected."

Wow... telling blatant lies about FOUR national leaders (from Cuba, Spain, Bolivia and Venezuela) all at once... I guess that injunction against "bearing false witness" doesn't apply when we're talking about "lefties", huh?

Okay, that's IT. I've tended to give the Catholic church a bit of an easy ride in the past. Sure, I've been up front that I think their leadership is hateful, bigoted, patriarchal, reactionary scum. But, you know, it's a religion--I expect idiotic opinions from religions. When they have non-idiotic opinions, that's a pleasantly surprising bonus. I've tended to feel that they have a right to hold their opinions and to express them, and there isn't much point making a fuss about it because you can't engage them rationally anyway.

But screw it. I've seen plenty of evidence of shady political meddling and other corruption, but this is too fucking blatant. The Catholic hierarchy isn't a religion, it's fucking organized crime. They run the spiritual protection racket thing for money, but they don't use it for religious purposes--they use it the same way they've used it ever since the fucking Middle Ages--to get more wealth and power to a few rich men, and to monkeywrench the secular system for the benefit of the rich (and male). Most of their reactionary policies have nothing what-so-fucking-ever to do with religious doctrine. They claim they do, but they pulled them out of their asses, just like papal in-fucking-fallibility, just to shore up control over the masses. The abortion thing, and especially the birth control thing--it's all about keeping the women down, keeping everyone poor and pliable so they won't question the Church and they'll work cheap for the factory owners. Show me a Catholic Bishop, and I'll show you a lying hypocrite so twisty you could stick his pointy head in a wine bottle and screw him and you'd be able to pull the fucking cork out.

Those bastards shouldn't just lose their tax exempt status, they should be goddamnwell outlawed. Take their money away, take their toys away, put it all in escrow, and tell the Catholic faithful if they want a Catholic church they can get together in huge assemblies and plan a new one out from scratch with democratic votes. Whatever structure the parishioners end up creating can have the stuff back. And Pope Rat and his fascist buddies can go live on the dole in Bolivia, or one of the other countries their old boys' network helped ruin.

Well I'm just impressed that the station apologized. You'd never hear an American or Canadian religious media outlet apologize for something like that.

This is the same church that won't let its priests become elected representatives because Catholicism "isn't political".
