OTTAWA - Elementary school students who smoke are more likely to report doing poorly in school, but the number of young people using cigarettes is dropping quickly, Statistics Canada reported Monday. The Youth Smoking Survey looked at the results of interviews conducted with students from Grade 5 to Grade 9 in 2002.
It found that only 12 per cent of current smokers rated themselves as doing better than average in school, compared with 40 per cent of students who never tried smoking.
On the other hand, 28 per cent of current smokers considered themselves to be below-average students. Only six per cent of those who never smoked saw themselves as performing below average

There's a very funny headline in this article ("Smokers don't read for fun ") that made me realise that headlines, which are taken as news by many people just passing by the paperstand, are completely ridiculous. Apparantly because 40% of young smokers report never reading for fun, none do. Also, I have a bit of a beef with defining Current Smoker as : someone who smoked cigarettes in the previous 30 days, or smoked more than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime
