I guess this is another one that has stared into the abyss of death and realized the money really does belong to the world and is not just for wallowing in an endless life of excess and pretense.

Although, to be far, the guy has not been nearly as self-absorbed as so many of the other billionaires are.

That gives the Gates foundation double the annual spending budget of major parts of the UN (like Unicef). While I applaud the donations, it does underline how screwy our societal priorities are.

I remember the Gates foundation funding a bunch of interesting, socially positive research that just doesn't get funded by Big Pharma - like finding a cure/preventive for malaria. I hope that sort of thing expands with Buffet's money.

Buffet has given a lot of money to conservative "family values" organizations in the past. He will sit as a member of the Board of the Gates Foundation that administers his current donation. But, near as I can tell, he is a pretty frugal capitalist. These sorts of individuals are always interesting.

Warren Buffett's daughter, whose name I can't recall, has funded a lot of feminist organizations in Latin America.

Usually, they give out information and birth control pills and condoms, advise about the possibility of abortion, and insure that information about sexually-transmitted diseases is widely available.

My understanding is that she hands out $10 to $20 million dollars annually on these causes.

It is a wonderful action, he is to be lauded for his generosity and civic spirit.

He's been planning to give away his fortune all his life, hasn't been much of a secret and we can see it in some of his actions such as his campaigning against the Bush administration's policy on estate taxes. His natural talent at birth has been to make money and it is obvious that he waited so long to give it away - in the meantime he would be able to grow its value faster than any other organization, and did so.

Somebody mentioned Unicef, personally if I had worked my life to make a fortune (and I don't have the natural skills Buffet has) I would do what he's doing - give it to the organization which does the best work that I know of. Interestingly enough, I'm visiting Seattle as we speak and it is absolutely phenomenal what Gates and Allen have done for this city.

Waren Buffet, Bill Gates and Paul Allen - three heros of mankind.

Although, in these forums, it is not unusual to find that you may well wish you had never asked
