India is having trouble deciding whether if French president Sarkozy's girlfriend comes with, she should be treated as the first lady. That seems reasonable to me, but I can well imagine it's giving the protocol people fits.

Maybe they should test the waters by visiting Mr. Born Again at the White House, and then lets sit back and laugh at all the evangelical tongues wagging.

Here's an idea: How about recognizing her as the president's friend and treating her with courtesy and consideration?
Instead of obsessing over crazy rules the standard should be one of human decency and civilized behaviour.
I say this not because of any feeling about Sarkozy or his policies, just as a general standard of behaviour.

Ummm...no.

She is his fiance. How about, as marzo says, she is treated like a human being and shown courtesy? I really cannot understand how come celebrity women are treated with so much derision and scorn. Escort? Sure she is.....

if she is his fiance then she should be treated as his wife, but at the same time I think she should be treated with respect at all turns.

She's a human being not a friggin decoration....to be 'planted' accordingly

Who cares what they do with her? Is she the President? Is the President on official business? If so, what the hell does that have to do with his wife, girlfriend, fuckbuddy or anyone else? Why assume that wives or girlfriends or whatever are anyone "official" anyhow?

I dunno. I don't really care, either.
Would it be better if she were locked in a closet or made to wear a bag over her head?

I guess they may have different protocols for first ladies and for regular members of president's entourage. I don't think it is about respect.

Why not? It's about what happens when old protocol slams into new realities.
