In the style of the old thread, here's the current one.

I live in Burnaby, so plan to vote for Derek Corrigan et al.

One interesting thing of note last time was a hatchet-job attempt by "Team Burnaby" on Corrigan with the usual lurid crap in big letters about how Corrigan didn't hire any cops and blah blah blah. Also, there was a recount and Sav Dhaliwal, one of the BCA members, squeaked in with three votes.

And they claim your vote doesn't count, hurhur.

Oh, some links -

You might be interested in seeing COPE's brand new campaign ads. We just released them this morning. We're working to lighten the mood and hopefully get more Vancouverites interested in municipal politics. Hope you like 'em!

The Richmond election is going to be interesting this year. There are a number of factors that make picking the winners very hard.

1) What happened to Raymond's vote? Raymond Chan lost to Alice Wong by 7000 votes. Why did he lose his votes. Did Alice simply run a better campaign? Did Richmond finally tire of Raymond's politics? Others point to Alice's support for keeping the Garden City Lands agricultural. Still others speak about the power of the NIMBY group which supposedly has a 10,000 member email group and was against Raymond for his initial support of an alcohol recovery house.

2) Name recognition #1 - the Halsey-Brandts. Former mayor & MLA Greg Halsey-Brandt is running for council. His wife Evelina Halsey-Brandt is running for re-election. As well his ex-wife Sue Halsey-Brandt is running. Will there be a limit of times that people will vote Halsey-Brandt and will this affect Sue as the being last on the ballot.

3) Name recognition #2 - Chen, Chen, Chen, & Cheng. Cynthia Chen is an incumbent city councilor, but she will need to ensure that people pick her out from 3 other similiar surnames. She is spending a fortune. As a former star realtor she can afford to.

4) No full slate. The developer party, Richmond First is running only four candidates. There will not be a full slate for any party this time. RCA and RITE are running 3 and 4 candidates respectively and are running joint ads as the "Garden City Coalition".

5) Issues. The Garden City Lands, Affordable Housing and the Olympics appear to be the key issues. Crime hysteria is also rampant in certain communities.

6) Voter turnout. After the federal election and US election it will be hard to get votes out.

McEvoy and Cote seem good to me. I don't know about the other two. Williams has a boring website that turned me off, and I know nothing about Harper.

From talking to people in New West and reading the local papers, there seems to be some discontent. Some people don't like the Mayor but I can't tell if its popular trend. I notice the Mayor is not endorsed by Labour, and neither is his opponent.

It appears the mayor is the choice of the labour council candidates as I just received an envelope from with the labour council candidate flyers and a card telling me the Wayne Wright deserves my vote along with the 4 labour council endorsed candidates.
At the same time I received another envelope with the mayor's flyer along with 3 right wing candidates including the woman who was the communications person for Yonah Martin who ran for the Conservatives in the recent federal election.
In 2004 Wright endorsed the Conservative candidate in the New Westminster-Coquitlam riding. As a 30-year member of the NDP, I am appalled at the hypocrisy of the Labour Council candidates who I understand are all members of the NDP of encouraging progressive voters to vote for a Mayor who has been anything but progressive. He has taken the side of developers over that of residents. The other candidate for mayor, Blair Armitage, is a man whose political background is that of a community activist and not a political partisan. He has successfully managed various enterprises while maintaining good relations with unionized workers who gained his respect.

So the Labour Council is endorsing a Conservative?

Can someone explain that to me?
