ATHENS: An explosion ripped through the United States embassy compound in central Athens on Friday, a police source said.

It was not clear what caused the blast and there was no immediate word on whether there were casualties.

Police cordoned off roads around the embassy.

Officials at the scene said that whatever caused the explosion damaged the official embassy sign outside the mission, but there was little other indication of the extent of damage inside.

Officials say it looks like homegrown Greek terrorists are responsible for the attack, not Islamic militants, as initially feared. A left-wing militant group called Revolutionary Struggle has reportedly claimed responsibility, and police are investigating the claim.

The article goes on to say that this was the third attack on US embassies and consulated around the world in the past year...an ugly sign of things to come...

Revolutionary Struggle is apparantly the inheritor of the now dismantled November 17 Marxist Terrorist Organization.
