Further information....

You can download the draft bill and Cabinet memo here.

The joint parliamentary committee considering the issue is due to report next week; webpage here.

A good article on the front page of the Glasgow Herald (hi, skdadl) yesterday. And an older BBC report.

For fun, the whole bill in Welsh ;-)

By the way, if you are getting a sore head looking for the power to make legislation on the spot, it's section 21(3).

I haven't read the bill yet and will wait to hear the committee's report -- but I think that this annoys me no end.

The British are not wimps. They have defeated terrorist campaigns before by standing up for their liberties, not abandoning them. I hope there will be strong and broad resistance to this kind of Ashcroftian ougie-bougie.

I guess the Brits are bringing to the homefront the kind of measures they have had in Northern Ireland for years. In the sixties, the British army marched into Belfast and cut down every single tree in the city... to prevent snipper attacks!
I do not support violence in any way, shape or form.. but the attacks did not end because of this and the environment of the city became decidedly worst off from the lack of shade, and recycling of Co2 into oxygen.
And Blair heads a "Labour" government?
