Powerless Came across this article at CBC Newsworld, about people living off the electric and water grid.
It's been a thought of mine that what we really need is a business that can come in to older homes (like mine) and retrofit it in such a way that the cost savings on bills pays for the retrofit over time. Maybe "grid free" isn't cost/benifit attainable for older homes, but that doesn't mean substantial savings could still be had by the consumer, and environmental costs reduced.

Yup.I have been checking google from time to time --she's a very strong writer -- expecting her to make a web-presence for herself, but what is totally remarkable is the timing. I was just clicking along from channel to channel and 'just happened to pass ch. 26 (cbc or NW) at precicely the right moment. Sherpafish would recognize her from Commercial Drive in Vancouver. The last time Reagan and I spoke her daughter wasn't eight months old...anyhow she met this Andy fella after we parted ways when I had to travel for my sis's wedding. Rebound!

We've wondered something similar about our old house, too, Tommy. But out here in sunny Saskatchewan, we're not holding our breath. They only just started a pilot project with wind turbines at SaskPower... I mean, really, what is more pervasive on the prairie than wind? The blond guy once had a house with a swimming pool, and they kept the pool heated with solar panels. Makes one wonder how much household energy could be generated with solar panels on the roof... Something we'd like to look into one of these days... After we re-insulate and some other big jobs like that. Insulation was sadly inadequate in 1912, and the improvements that have been made on this place since were shoddily done. So that'd be first on the list, saving up our pennies for it.
