The 17 workers -- who do secretarial, accounting, data entry and other work for UFCW Local 832 in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson -- are represented by the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union (COPE).

Paul Williamson, a spokesman for the workers, said UFCW demands would see new employees earn significantly less than present employees while working more hours.

Existing staff would also be placed on the lower wage and benefits schedule if they switch jobs at UFCW or are promoted from temporary to permanent employees, COPE says.

Meh. UFCW 832 signed enough two-tiered contracts under fuhrer number 1 (Bernie Christoff) and fuhrer number 2 (Colin Trigwell) that I ain't surprised that they would demand the same from their own employees. It's fucked up but it's no surprise.

Paul Williamson said talks broke down Friday but the UFCW made another offer Sunday, which included a pay package of a 2.5-per-cent increase over four years, which was rejected by the COPE union members.

Williamson, chief negotiator and acting president of the COPE local, said the main stumbling block in negotiations has been UFCW's insistence of two-tier proposals that would see any future employees work longer hours, earn less vacation time and a lower rate of pay.

While I'm unaware of UFCW's history of such contracts (I'm not denying it has one - just that I wasn't aware of it), it's certainly not something I'd support any union accepting.

I'm not willing to heap all of the blame for those contracts on UFCW 832. The boss, after all, is the boss - and there's not a lot that can be done about recalcitrant and evil bosses other than job action. But the union signed far too many of those contracts without much of a fight.
