I'm surprised I couldn't find a thread about this before now. Anyhow, I guess once the casinos had to close, it became an emergency.

quote:
TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine issued an executive order early Saturday that ended a weeklong state government shutdown and set the stage for Atlantic City's casinos to reopen.

The governor acted minutes after lawmakers approved a $30.9 billion state budget that increases the state sales tax, ending the stalemate.

"I now feel comfortable we can begin the orderly restoring of the business of government," Corzine said.

The 12 casinos, which closed Wednesday, got permission to resume business at 7 a.m., but operations did not start up immediately. On Monday, 45,000 furloughed state workers could return to work, although exact plans were not immediately announced. State parks would reopen and lottery sales would resume.

Story here.

What really gets me is that they've increased the sales tax by a percent so they can give tax relief to people rich enough to own property! And these are DEMOCRATS.

I feel so sorry for people living in a country where there is no one progressive to vote for.
