quote:
Ascending the steep steps that lead from the street to the scene of her son's murder, 47-year-old Louisa Prudhomme is charged by a Doberman Pinscher. Prudhomme reaches over a gate and gives the guard dog a rough pat on the head.

"Sam doesn't seem to remember me," she says.

What Prudhomme will never forget is that just past the snarling Doberman is the apartment on a hill where six years ago her 21-year-old son Anthony was shot in the face with a .25-caliber semi-automatic while lying on a futon she had purchased for him from IKEA. He died wearing a shirt that read, "Keep the Peace."

Anthony Prudhomme was slain by members of the Avenues, a Latino street gang. But he was not a rival gang member, or a police informant, or a drug dealer. The Avenues did not target him for the content of his character, or even the contents of his apartment.

They targeted him for the color of his skin.

Well, to be honest this article smacks of generalization. It paints all Latino community as racist, which is wrong.

You might also want to read some comments below. Not all are insightful, but one poster writes about the tensions in LA as minorities compete for declining jobs. All courtesy of neo-liberalism.

My point is that this goes right in line with the anti-immigration hysteria that is so common in USA lately.

I can't believe that AlterNet would print such onesided racially provocative crap. About the only thing provocative about it. Demographics in East LA are changing, as they are everywhere, that's hardly news. Innocent bystanders being killed in gang wars are a tragedy, perhaps an idictment on our whole unjust society, but that isn't exactly 'news' either. The only real news here is how standard racist spin is rearing its ugly head again, even on some supposedly progressive sites like AN.

This kind of hate filled ignorance in reply might even get called on Freak Dominion:

"A lot of Blacks don't seem to do well in the thinking department.

These concepts are obvious to most people, but some just don't get it.

- If you build your house in a tropical area prone to massive hurricanes, its going to get destroyed, eventually.

- If you can barely provide for yourself, don't have kids

- If you walk around looking like a violent criminal, don't be surprised when you get treated like one

- If the country your in is oppressing you, immigrate somewhere else!

I know lots of Americans who moved to Europe or Canada because they didn't like the new policies of the guv'ment. "

At least One good samaritan was able to challenge it straight on -probably non-white.
