quote: Sexuality is about creativity and self expression, and alternative sexualities should be celebrated, former South African archbishop Desmond Tutu said on Thursday. "You should love who you are," Tutu said in a film-clip message at the opening of the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in Rosebank, Johannesburg. About 350 gay and lesbian people of all races gathered for the festival. "We are taking our place at the table," said British filmmaker Rikki Beadle-Blair, referring to his discovery of more and more acceptance of gay culture every year he visited South Africa.

Hmmmn -- just noticed that "former archbishop" before Tutu's name. I hadn't realized that he had stepped down. I wonder what relations are like between the South African church and the C of E, whose archbishop has just snubbed the Canadian bishops for their liberal positions on SSM, ordination, and so on.

I think he stepped down when he became ill, skdadl. (The poor man has cancer, and apparently it's inoperable.)

He ought to say love God and close the gap between who you are and who you could be for the greater glory of God.... Tutu is no heavyweight, nor a spokesman for conherent Christianity

I can think of nothing that could speak more eloquently about Desmond Tutu's basic goodness and humanity than to be condemned by the likes of this bigot.

I had the honour of interpreting for Archbishop Tutu - and his wife. Both were learned, witty, and seemed full of love for humanity in spite of all the horrid things they had experienced and witnessed under apartheid.

On the contrary, Lena, I beleive that Tutu is a great example of what a Christian should be.

Not so quick my friend. Nuns get some theological training, and often get university degrees paid for by their orders. Some also have pastoral responsibilities as heads of convents or similar structures. Some also take on pastoral responsibilities at prisons and hospitals.

Some nuns even write theology Ph D's on the subject lesbianism and spitiruality, although those tend not to get an impramatur.

What a very nice man Tutu is. Has he always been pro gay? Does he support gay marriage?

I suppose Lena's hero is Rob Anders. After all if Desmond Tutu is "no heavyweight, nor a spokesman for coherent Christianity" then I suppose that's no different from referring too Nelson Mandela, in a pejorative sense of course, as a communist and a terrorist.

Step right up! Come one come all to the church of Coherent Christianity! That's right folks, we've got a religion that makes sense here! Had to do a bit of fine tuning--kinda got rid of that messy God business--but you know what, you won't even miss him! Come on in, try it for yourselves. Objective truth! Proper puncuation! Going once, going twice . . .

I really like Desmond Tutu. But from when I first heard of him, I always found myself mixing him with a Mordecai Richler book, giving me the result "Desmond Tutu Meets the Hooded Fang"
