STRIKERS MASSACRED IN THE PHILIPPINES - YOUR HELP NEEDED NOW

Three days ago, on 16 November, fourteen people were killed by army and police in the Philippines. Those people were strikers, trade unionists like yourselves. They worked on sugar farms in sugar mills, and had
been on strike for ten days. Two of those killed were children, aged two and five, who died from suffocation as a result of the tear gas used. Some 35 people suffered gunshot wounds, 133 were arrested, hundreds more were wounded.

The trade union movement in the Philippines has called for a massive international protest condemning the murders, demanding a full
investigation of what happened. They are demanding that hundreds of workers illegally dismissed be rehired, and that criminal charges against the strikers be dropped. Please send on your message of protest by going here:

http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=39

Make sure to pass this message on to everyone you know. Let's flood the Filipino government with thousands of messages in the next few hours and days.

I've sent my message and passed this along to my contacts. I would urge everyone else here to do the same.

I sent the message this mornign and just got an email from a friend in Paris. She says that she has searched "mainstream" media and not found a mention of it and would like a "media" link to include to her contacts. Does anyone have a link I can give back?

Here's a link to LabourStart's full coverage of Phillipines labour issues:

http://tinyurl.com/3zglc

You can find a lot of links there about this strike and the killings. LabourStart is both an international newswire and an activist network for labour folks. They're also the ones who organized the email campaign.

Done and done too. I sent messages on to my few media contacts here, and I'm trying to think positively, but it is discouraging, isn't it, that we haven't heard about this through them already?

P'tachk! Capitalism of any kind is for the dishonourable and the sleaziest of back-stabbing cowards.

Message has been sent/passed on.

When shit like this happens, I sometimes think five-eyes-for-an-eye might be just fine.

Murdering filthy power cliques.

Just sent a message. Thanks for the story. Too bad about the news.

Edited to add: I agree, skdadl, but these kind kind of stories need folks who are able to push them a bit. International coverage is especially bad these days. One would think that Latin America, Eastern Europe, most of Asia, and most of Africa didn't exist if one were just following the news.
