The new Kadima Party government in Israel is preparing to impose a "unilateral" settlement of the border and national issue with the Palestinians.

In this scenario, if the Israeli government couldn't find someone to negotiate with(and I think we can assume they'd probably just announce they couldn't find someone)they would just impose a border between themselves and the Palestinians, a border which would leave every major Israeli settlement in place and take so much land that a Palestinian state could not be established.

Why on earth to they think they could pull this off, given that the whole reason for what is variously called "terrorism" or "the armed struggle" is that the Palestinians are determined NOT to let Israel impose a settlement entirely on their own terms?

Isn't Olmert basically just setting up a perpetual state of conflict and war, in which the Israeli government would continue to demand that the U.S., the UK and Canada unquestioningly defend everything they do, and would continue to emotionally blackmail those countries(especially the US)into giving this support by falsely linking this situation with Europe and America's failure to stop the Holocaust?

How did the guy ever manage to win an election with such a masochistic and ultimately suicidal idea?

The traumatic guilt of Israel's founding binds that state together. Righting those wrongs, and reconstituting the Palestinians as full people really is an existential threat to the ideological State of Israel - that is, the lattice of concepts and identifications that Israelis share as the basis of their community.

The question is still binary for them: Be Masters or Slaves? The can't conceive that their Wall and their casting out of the Palestinians imprison them most of all.
