If you swap music files online and are a Videotron customer, looks like your ISP is prepared to rat you out.

quote:
Producing the identities of Internet users alleged of wrongdoing happens so regularly, says a lawyer for Videotron, that he's bewildered as to why other ISPs are fighting a motion from the music industry to hand over the names of people who share large volumes of songs on-line.

"We do it on a regular basis. It's not very complicated," said Serge Sasseville, following the conclusion of weighty Federal Court of Appeal hearings about file-swapping, which could lead to the start of lawsuits against so-called music pirates

I saw a blogger address this story earlier today:
quote:
...the Globe And Mail article fails to mention that Videotron is, in fact, acting out of pure corporate greed. Videotron is owned by the Québecor media conglomerate, which also owns, among other things, a record label (Musicor), a large-scale record retail chain (Archambault), and the most important record distributor in Canada (Sélect). Québecor has also launched very a widespread (and pathetic) campaign with its signed artists to make the general population understand the evils of music piracy.

What's "not very complicated" for Videotron's lawyer is the fact that Québecor's bottom line is a higher priority than its customers' privacy.
