Jackman fuels dispute over law tuition

quote:
Hal Jackman, chancellor of the University of Toronto, says the law school's sales pitch for its plan to raise tuition fees to $22,000 cannot be trusted.

"The argument that they're making is that by increasing tuition fees and providing more student aid, it increases access, and I think I have some questions about the logic of that statement. If you want to make the place more accessible, you lower fees, not increase them," said Mr. Jackman, a 1956 alumnus.

Yeah, so much for my idea of going to law school in Toronto.

Say, does anyone know whether Hal Jackman is in any way related to Barbara Jackman, well-known Toronto immigration lawyer? Just curious.

Of course Jackman's right to make school more accessible by lowering fees. That goes the same as dropping taxes to create more jobs.

bad analogy. But we can still agree on lowering tuition.

Hal Jackman is not related to Barb Jackman.

The U. of T. tuition scam is being undertaken by the Dean, among others, who was head of Mike Harris's special committee on privatization.

Basically, they are privatizing U. of T. by making it inaccessible to the people who own it, being the citizenry of this province.

The jump in fees was justified by the "need" to raise professors salaries to remain competitive with the US (though US professors are often deficient in knowledge of Canadian law and vice versa).

The Committee which though this was such a good idea had on it a number of professors whose salaries would be increased by 40% or so...they thought it was a GREAT idea.

For the rest of the province, it sucks, though.
