Now that we have a lot of people's travel history, what places would you like to visit?

Until recently, I've been inflicted with an irrational fear of flying. Since Sept. 11th, 01, however, I have lost that irrational fear.

I know now that it's a totally rational fear.

So, I don't really have much interest in traveling at the moment. But if it's just me I have to worry about and had no other responsibilities, I think my mind would change.

I'd find a cruise ship or something to cross the Atlantic so I could visit Italy.

I'd like to visit some of the places my father saw during the war. And, I'm interested in both the classical and renaisance history. There's enough there to keep you going for a nice long visit.

Or several visits. I'm reading about the Punic Wars right now, and have this strong desire to see North Africa as well and Italy and the rest of the Mediterranean.

I'm with you Tommy.

Everyone who has been there raves about Italy. That would be my first choice.

Well, I studied in Italy so of course I'm prejudiced. But not just for the classical and renaissance art and architecture, but also for contemporary social movements - 1 million against the war in Florence. And, of course, the food.

One of the miracles of living in Italy was that I ate all this great food and drank fab wine and always seemed to lose weight. There are a lot of hills, I guess.

On the other hand, cruise ships - stuffing oneself and moving very little - are heart-attack city...

I'd like to get up into to the Nahanni. I'd also like to improve my kayaking skills enough so I can solo-paddle from the Gulf Islands to Haida Gwaii. Without going *blubb* *blubb*. The high arctic. Ellesmere Island National Park.

Iceland, the Northwest of Norway, Greenland...

I'd like to get back to London,Uk. And to Basque country. Also to Greece, Morrocco, Libya...

I have a great uncle who died in WW I and whose grave in France hasn't been visited by one of us in many years. I'd like to go there.

I'd like to see more of Ireland, Thailand, India, and Japan. I've never been "Down Under" and might like to go there.

I'd love to see more of Italy, too.

I'd like to see Northern England (my wife's birthplace), Scotland, New Zealand.
Closer to home it's Ocean Falls, BC (mother's birthplace) and I'd like to go kayaking in the Queen Charlottes (Haida Gwaai if you prefer). I may get to do that this year, but the logistics of getting there are a pain, considering that it's not really that far away.

Ocean Falls. I know the guy who bought Ocean Falls. If he could have salvaged it properly (tugs and barges) he'd have that fortune by now - that he's still chasing after. The hospital alone is a goldmine.

Let's see... every province I haven't visited (collect 'em all kiddies!), Scotland and Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. Hell, nearly any place I haven't been, come to think of it. Except for Italy. Food allergies prevent me from eating anything with tomatoes or cheese. I'd *starve* On the other hand, I could stand to lose some weight....

Come on! You can't let stuff like that scare you. I would have taken a flight the next day after 9/11 if I could have.

Anyways, on topic, I want to go back to Europe, and possibly live there for a bit. I like the life style, and living there (though unemployment is fairly high), I also want to go to Thailand, mainly because I have a few Thai friends that I met in Belgium, and so I just gotta go visit them ASAP! Possibly also to somewhere in Africa, but no STRONG urge. And I haven't been a fan of South/central American countries for some reason. Though, my brother-in-law is from Mexico, I donno, just haven't had the "Desire" to go to those places. I wouldn't mind also visiting like China/Thailand(like I said) places in Asia, and the north east area of Russia...

I'm sure there are more places, but those are the main areas...

I'll have to put myself in the same boat with all the Italy lovers - I visited when I was 16, and will be going back for a month this May, something I have been anticipating for a long time.

I also have a very strong desire to go to Ukraine, where my father's family came from, and Russia and Spain. Pretty much you could take me most places in Europe (east and west), and I'd be pretty happy, though Germany doesn't hold much attraction for me.

Outside the continent, my next major goal for travel is all across Canada, hopefully my reward at the end of my Masters degree in 2 years. And after Lord of the Rings, definately New Zealand.

I hear you. That's why I'd like to spend a lot of time at Pompei and Hurculeneum.

You know, talk about wasted youth. I thought to be one of those archeology dudes one had to slog through many years of university. But there are still lay people who do these things. Had I known, I would have ventured away from England and gone to Pompei, and worked for pasta and cheap wine, brush in hand under the meditereanean sun, wich would have bleached my hair blonde in no time, given me a tan, and aquired the eye of a wealthy middle aged Italian lady who would have kept me comfortable until she died and left her millions and sea side villa.

....anything for science.

I've been to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and I'd highly recommend them to anyone with an imagination and a passion for human history. Bring lots of water, though -- I almost passed out from dehydration there.

I would like to go to about a thousand places, and I'll spare everyone the list. Right at the top, though, is Santorini. I continue to work on contriving a way to move there forever.

I've always wanted to see the Holy Land too - visit the religious sites in Israel. But I don't think I'll be getting there any time soon. I'd like to visit other countries in that area too, just to see what they're like - see the architecture, the culture, close up.

I'd love to go to Spain and take a side trip into Morocco. Of course, being an ignorant unilingual North American, I'd probably be relegated to tourist traps and major hotels rather than actually immersing myself in the "regular life" of the countries I visit, which seems to me immensely more enriching.

Well no, Flotsom , I guess not.

But then The Darien isn't so soft its self!:

quote:
The guide includes such sobering notes as

1976 One expedition member mysteriously shot and killed.
1977 Jeep lost in accident in Ecuador.
1979 Jeep lost to an unsavory encounter with a Columbian Park official.
This is plainly not a trip for the novice.

Yeah, Deb, I always thought it would be great to take a month off of everything, rent a car (sorry folks - the train doesn't go everywhere I want to go) and just travel all over Canada. Hit a bunch of small towns everywhere that no one has ever heard of, go to weird and wonderful local attractions, that kind of thing. Take a kabillion pictures of all the sights, make an album when I get home...stay in bed and breakfasts or cheap little hole-in-the-wall places...

That would be so much fun! Maybe after our kids are grown up, we'll do it, Deb!

I would love to go back to the Yukon and then to the NWT -- only drawback is those damn bears -- but that's another story for another thread -- maybe "close encounters with large furry animals with BIG teeth and sharp claws". Oh yeah, I forgot about the bugs.

Anyways, also to the Maritimes..

Scotland, Ireland, Wales, & travel through the rest of Europe with a knife, fork and corkscrew...

Hopefully in this lifetime (yeah, sure)

I have been reading Paul Theroux recently and am quite struck by his train travels. Not sure that I could handle the Trans-Siberian Railway, but it sounds neat. My list of want-to-see places is as follows: Ireland, Japan, Arizona, the Falkland Islands, Kenya, the Caribbean (the plan is one island every winter!), the Far North and all points in between.

Sherpafish. I remember reading Sebastian Snow's The Rucksack Man. It's the story of Snow's attempt to walk north from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic Ocean. A few days into the Darien crossing he meets an eighteen year old Wade Davis. Interesting contrast. A quiet, confident, and unflappable Davis -- at eighteen -- probably saved the elder Snow's life. BC boy. Unlikely, that Snow'd have made it through that bog.

But today, mostly, I want to go to Vancouver. I like Vancouver and it's been over a year. I miss Vancouver. And I'm craving sushi.

I really want to go to Europe. I'd like to spend a month in France right now.

I also long to go to North Africa, but that looks less and less like a good idea. Damn colonialism. Damn the War on Scary Concept.

I saw myself wearing something in white gauze, strolling barefoot through the waves at the edge of the sands at sunset, someone tossing a garland into the water beside me ... *sigh*

I also saw myself eating. A lot.

Does anyone else see the War on Scary Concept closing off more and more of the most beautiful parts of the world from people who appear to be spoiled North Americans?

Heh heh. You do know that Scott never made the North Pole. Also Admiral Byrd never wintered in that little shack on Antarctica. The little bugger invented it all. "That's not cricket."

Seriously, I've got photocopies of Knud Rasmussen's and Peter Freuchen's ugly mugs pinned to my wall. I'm lucky in a way, that I haven't got to the point yet where I can really get into older diaries of explorers, polar or otherwise. With the exception of Thesiger. I don't know why this is. But it means I have all those great sagas to look forward to.

George Meegan's book is really good.

quote:
George Meegan, "The Longest Walk"
George began his walk at Tierra del Fuego on the southern tip of South America on January 26, 1977, and for the next seven years hiked northward, ending his journey at Prudhoe Bay, AK on August 19, 1983, covering 19019 miles, a world record, on his hike.

On a bit of a tangent, you might also like this site, Sherpafish:

Here's his book -- It's a great read:

I highly recommend Michael Asher's books, especially In Search of the Forty Days Road and The Impossible Journey.

Where would I like to go?

Camping and hiking in Gros Morne, Big Bend in TX, or amongst the saguaros outside Tucson. Each is too beautiful for words.
salmon fishing in New Brunswick
at the Palio in Siena in July
Iceland in January
Vimy Ridge
Tokyo

Of course, New York any time any day, although I'm partial to October, and nothing beats early May sitting in the right field bleachers at Yankee Stadium.

Speaking of Journeys... I thought I'd pop in with a rather a propos URL

Mandos: Being a rather provincial man at heart, I would refuse to go beyond Canada's borders in any case for higher education. Sept. 11th has only reinforced my bent towards insularity and I fully intend to stay at the same university for my Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate.

I don't know why people fetishize the notion of going to a different university for a graduate degree than an undergraduate degree. Seems to me that given the way personal connections drive the world these days that you'd want to keep them with your professors so that when thesis defence time comes you get a bit of a break.

Yes, officially they're not supposed to, but the fact is that personal knowledge of an interview subject almost always mellows the disposition of the interviewer.
