Regarding that banner I saw at the top of this page...

I don't support the idea at all (this thread is not about debating this issue though) but another thing struck me: suppose I did like the idea. Who would be the most logical group to support in the fight for state-run childcare?

A) A parents' association
B) A childcare workers' union
C) The Canadian Auto Workers's union

Hmmm....

I rode in from Windsor airport to downtown Windsor with two senior CAW union officials (in town to deal with taxi cab strike). On the way they described how they view their role as including a general obligation to promote social justice (which in their minds includes promoting a massive state run day care infrastructure). Of course in the next breath they admitted they want to organize all those daycare workers..

..the daycare proposal has nothing to do with social justice. It's about whether we as a society encourage parents to abdicate their role as primary caregivers or embrace it. There is nothing socially just (or arguably even beneficial)about millions more middle class families warehousing pre-school age children because they a)find it stressful or b)inconvenient to their careers. Most families can survive with a used car and a smaller home during pre-school years. The fact that they convince themselves that it is in their infants' best interests that they keep fundkng their consumer habit (or protect their pension, or make that next pay raise, seniority, or senior partner etc etc..or whatever other excuse gets people through the night)is simply a reflection of their own disconnect from what's really important in life.

Research is now finally being disclosed clearly showing that day care kids are more likely to be maladjusted. This is in the nick of time and reinforces the conclusion that the labour movement's desire to have every mommy ship her child off to a state run (union run) daycare is a bad idea (on every socialogical level). The labour movement is not helping bring justice to families but is actually helping to undermine them. Justice for women doesn't automatically dictate that they be entirely freed from the rigours of motherhood. That is simply stupid Orwellian thinking and labour should stick to getting richer benefits for its members and leave the social issues to voters to figure out for themselves.

Have we no fathers? Child care is mommy's job?

This piece of misspelled sexism was allegedly written by a Whitby lawyer born in 1970. I'm doubtful.

You're absolutely right, parents who use daycares are uncaring and neglectful, but we shouldn't single them out. Let's punish all parents who've ever gone out for a night and hired a babysitter, parent's who've dropped their kids off with friends and family while running errands, parents who've dropped kids off with grandma and grandpa while they go on vacation, parents who are too lazy to drive their own children to school and rely on state-provided schoolbuses, parent's who've ever worked out at a YMCA and left the kids with the YMCA's childcare staff, parents who have ever sent their children to camp....

You see where I'm going with this?

Without even going into all the erroneous assumptions, I'm calling "bullshit" on this:

Yeah, I didn't notice the line that Wilfred highlighted. This guy is obviously a sexist, right-wing troll and not really here to discuss things from a progressive angle. You're right.
