quote: Mount St. Helens emitted a large plume of steam on Monday, with fears of an eruption rising as scientists estimated the width of the volcano's crater had expanded by 15 to 30 metres.
Several quakes with a magnitude of 3 also shook the mountain in Washington state.

Apparently there are new and bigger steam bursts coming from Mount St Helen's. The steam and ash cloud that is rising today is even bigger than yesterday's.
Scientists say this isn't the big eruption yet, but they believe that it is coming.
(That's me summarizing radio report; nothing on the website.)

Was anyone else in the vicinity for the May, 1980 blow? Awesome but freaky.

My dad heard Mt. St. Helen's go BOOM back in '80. He was playing tennis in Stanley Park in Vancouver. Which, by my map, is about 350 km away. Wow.
My aunt also heard it while camping near Penticton. Then, a few hours later, they got coated in ash.
I, of course, slept thru the whole thing.
