Well, this explains everything. And nothing. All these pious, church going Americans, supporting the right and dismissing all Middle Eastern countries of religious fanaticism - pot meet kettle:

quote:
More than 90 per cent of Americans – including one in five who say they are atheists – believe in God or a universal power, and more than half pray at least once a day, according to results of a poll released yesterday that takes an in-depth look at Americans' religious beliefs.

And this is interesting, and pretty much what I would expect:

quote:
It found, among Jews who pray daily, 36 per cent are politically conservative; among evangelical Christians, 56 per cent who pray daily are politically conservative. Two-thirds of Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists who responded are Democrats or lean Democratic, compared with 22 per cent of Mormons polled.

In short - evangelical Christians are nuts who tend to favour right wing, war mongering governments (and people).

Twenty per cent of American atheists believe in God or a universal power? Was there a question to begin the survey along the lines of: Would you describe your self as literate or part of a litter?

The typical pretendy lefty bigotry at play.

If 56% of American Christians are politically conservative, then a literate reviewer might notice that 44% of them aren't. Most of that 44% are likely politically progressive.

But to hell with them. Admitting that would just get in the way of the hatemongering.

If you just leave out the conservatives I'd find it highly unlikely that a majority of the rest would be considered progressive by any measure that people on this board would use. You are saying there are almost no religious centrists.

Besides, while it's nice to have religious progressives, religious conservatives are dangerous.

See here for a description of religious conservatism and how it combines with authoritarianism.

I don't find this kind of self-righteous, cafe latte, urban poseur, faux sophisticate, fashion pate leftist chic schtick to be either the least bit chic or the least bit helpful. In fact, it's a pain in the ass.

That's funny, FM!

My thought when I read about 1 in 5 atheists believing in God or a universal power was that 1 in 5 of atheists questioned were in the proverbial foxhole at the time they were being polled.

With regard to the title of this thread, it contains as much news-flash value as a title reading, "Egyptians put faith in Allah, survey finds".

My understanding is that the question offered two options - and some analysis I've read elsewhere suggests that some number of that 58% would have more closely identified as centrists / moderates.

In any event, Stargazer's bigoted post made no distinction between conservative, moderate or progressive. It was just the usual knee-jerk anti-religious bullshit one sees all too frequently around here.
