I was out for a walk in the east end of Toronto, Queen and Broadview area. For non-Torontonians, this is an old working-class area, like everywhere in Toronto getting yuppified, but still kind of a low-rent nabe.

I was noticing that the majority of houses sported those decals warning would-be burglars that the joint was under some kind of protection. I know that my sweetie with a business lease recently had to get this kind of 'protection' to satisfy his insurers. A modern protection racket.

I'm not a homeowner. Is this a requirement from home insurers?

Who has security and why? Just curious. . .

Not that I know of. I don't even lock my doors most of the time. But then, I live in a small town.

However, if you live in a high risk area, or if you have already suffered a breakin, your insurance company might get pushy.

They don't get pushy, they just charge more. Having security gets you lower rates.

Our apartment had a system installed when we bought it, and it lowered our insurance rates significantly. We didn't tell them that it doesn't work, and we don't know the passcode to use it anyway. But we do have the labels...
