So a friend of mine has applied for a new job, got the first interview, got the second interview, and now has been told very specifically to get a referee who has/is a direct supervisor. My friend doesn't want his present employer to know he is looking for a new job, so is in a bind. I suppose a prospective employer can demand references from whoever it wants, including present employers, but is this kosher? What are your thoughts? For the record, I suggested he has to make a decision on whether he wants the new job or not, and keep in mind the demands of the prospective employer when making a decision.

It is very unethical to ask for a reference from a current employer. When job hunting, it is good to compile a list of references from former employers. The exception to this is where an employee has been informed of a layoff and told by his current employer that it will provide references. That happened to me when my division was given six month's notice of its closing and I was able to use my existing supervisor as a reference.

A reasonable new employer would understand why a current reference wouldn't be possible in a case such as this. And if the new employer isn't reasonable, I don't think your friend would want to work there.
