(Tegucigalpa) Honduran voters choosing a president Sunday were deciding between a former leftist-turned-conservative who promises to wipe out violent crime with the death penalty and a rival who vows to eliminate widespread government corruption.

A national exit poll showed candidate Manuel Zelaya, of the opposition Liberal Party, ahead by 6 percentage points, and a top election official said that the voting appeared to be in favour of Zelaya.

The country's nearly 4 million voters also were electing a vice-president, 128 congressional representatives, 298 mayors and 2,000 city councillors.

[...]

A national exit poll released by Honduran television stations HRN and Channel 5 showed that Zelaya had won 50.6 per cent of votes, compared to 44.3 per cent for Lobo Sosa. The survey was based on interviews with 120,000 voters and was conducted in conjunction with the private firm Management Engineering.

Aristides Mejia, president of Honduras' national election institute, said officials were awaiting additional results before releasing any numbers, but added that "the clear tendency is in favour of Zelaya."

Mexico's yawing left, too, it seems. I don't recall the source, but I read that Hugo's buddy is ahead of Fox in the runup to the election there, and that's why Fox recalled his ambassador to Venezuela..playing the jingo card.

Evo Morales, another friend of Hugo's, looks to win in Bolivia.

Yes, Andrés Manuel López Obrador is the favorite to win in Mexico, despite the attempts by Fox's PAN to preemptively exclude him from the race.
Or, in fact partly because of these bungled attempts.

Here is some good context on the so called desafuero to exclude Obrador, but check the narcosphere for updates and how it all backfired for Fox.

Honduras is a little mentioned shithole of a banana republic off Uncle Sam's back doorsteps where about 80 percent of the land is owned by foreign corporations - United Brand and Standard Fruit companies of America being large monopolies in coffee and bananas. Children there suffer chronic hunger and die prematurely at a rate of about 40 per day. They need socialism.

Socialismo o Muerte!
Viva la revolucion!

Don't be fooled by the name "Liberal Party". They and the incumbent "National Party" have been ruling Honduras for years (apart from the periodic long stretches of dictatorship).

The news media don't seem to be too clear about what's going on.

Zelaya is variously described as a Leftist, Right-wing, center-right, a wealthy agricultural land owner, a logging magnate (apparently confusing him with his opponent Lobo, who is a logging magnate), and a former congressman and bank director.

And it seems the announcement of Zelaya's victory was a bit premature, as the race is apparently still too close to call.

Yes, Zelaya sounds like your typical liberal - ranting and raving about law and order and government corruption. I don't see what the problem is in that country. They've got free market capitalism and oligarchy to rule the roost. And this banana republic, just a few days drive from Texas, has poverty and unemployment rates of 70 per cent and 45 per cent!. But they need law and order ?. Jesus Christ almighty.

A "choice" between two centre-right parties?

And I thought India had it bad with religious wackos, Stalinists, and American lapdogs as the main choices.
