Three organizations have launched a legal challenge of the Safe Third Country Agreement. They, joined by an asylum seeker in the U.S., are asking the Federal Court to overturn the designation of the United States as a safe third country. Liz McWeeny, president of the Canadian Council for Refugees, said, "We are asking the courts to rule that the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement is unconstitutional and in breach of international law. The U.S. was not safe for Maher Arar, and it isn't safe for refugees." The other two organizations are Amnesty International and the Canadian Council of Churches.

Amnesty International

Good thread topic, Michelle. This issue is much more important than the press it is getting would suggest. I suppose because the press assumes that Amnesty International and the Canadian Council of Churches have no chance of success on this issue? But maybe they do.

(can't I write one damn post without having to edit for spelling?

Whether it's a "safe third country or not, it should not be the case that a refusal in the USA means a refusal in Canada ... that's just stupid on so many levels.

The US might have been a safe third country 25 years ago. It is definitely not today.
