NEW YORK - A small aircraft crashed into a high-rise on the Upper East Side, setting off a fire and startling New Yorkers, police said. There were conflicting reports on whether the aircraft was a small plane or a helicopter.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen. Flames were seen shooting out of the windows. Video from the scene showed at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

"There's huge pieces of debris falling," said one witness who refused to give her full name. "There's so much falling now, I've got to get away."

Whether anyone was injured was not known, and it was unclear if the crash was an act of terrorism.

The address of the building is 524 E. 72nd Street — a 50-story condominium tower built in 1986 and located nearby Sotheby's Auction House. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million.

Several news organizations said there were two people believed dead, but this could not be immediately confirmed.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft involved was a a private plane, flying under visual flight rules on a cloudy afternoon.

The accident happened at 2:45 PM, Eastern Time.

The FBI quickly said there were no indications of terrorism.

NORAD sent fighter jets over ``numerous'' U.S. cities in response to a small plane crashing today into an apartment building on New York's Upper East Side. ``While every indication is that this is an accident, we see this as a prudent measure at this time,'' said Mike Perini, a NORAD spokesman.

``They were not in contact with air-traffic control at the time.''

``It was a fixed wing aircraft,'' Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said.

The pilot had been flying in a corridor over the East River, she said. ``He should have been over the East River.''

She said the flight was flying by visual flight rules, meaning they didn't need to be in touch with FAA air-traffic control.

Well, I can see why this hits the headlines big time, though. I mean, after all, those 60000000 Iraqis are dead because Dubya used the event of the last planes crashing into Manhattan buildings as an excuse to kill Afghans and Iraqis.

Ridiculous. A small plane crashes, and you have fighter planes over Manhattan. What are they gonna do? Shoot down the news helicopters?

Even worse are the automatic-weapon toting police with Kevlar helnets and vests. Holy christ, what a bunch of bed wetting fools. Do they all go through a collective pantsshitting at the mere mention of "airplane". What a bunch of pussys.

CBC just reported that Canadian cities were patrolled as well as the US ones just after the incident.

Can you imagine if the NORAD response on 9/11 was anywhere near as quick and comprehensive as this?

I completely understand NORAD's response, actually. Nobody knew that it was an accident at first, although the fact that it was a small plane pointed towards that.

What I don't understand is the MSM's reaction even after learning who the occupants were. They harped on for hours and hours after Lidle was identified about how unsecure and unsafe the small municipal airports around the US might be. What's that? This was an accident and not an attack? Well, we can't let the truth get in the way of a good reporting angle.
