Methinks he should have bought his own skirt however - he'd be far more comfortable if it isn't too snug: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3129401.stm

Ah, nothing like a good nudge-wink story in the dog days:

quote:
"The Scottish are very lucky to be able to wear kilts all the time," he said - adding he was not trying to imitate all of the traditions that come with wearing one.

There'll always be an England...

Well, after I read that, I just had to read the story, 'lance.

I think it looks quite good, although if it really is two sizes too small and I were the friend who'd leant it to him, I'd be worried every time he sat down ...

Imagine. Such a big deal about two missing seams. Or why not shorts? The posties here wear shorts. Lately, actually, it appears that our posties wear just about anything.

I wonder whether I would enjoy being a postie ...

skdadl, surely you've noticed that shorts are more "socially acceptable" (on either sex) in Canadian cities than European ones. Suspect that in Sweden it doesn't usually get so warm that tropical-weight trousers are standard issue for bus drivers. In Italy they are - I've never seen a male bus driver or postman wearing shorts in Italy, or France, though I've seen female bus drivers and postwomen wearing skirts in hot weather.

These "cultural codes" are a bit silly, but they are very real. Not just in Europe, but also in many Latin American countries, and as MK says, in many Asian ones.

The dudes over at the Utilikilt site (I've linked to them so many times they should start paying me) insist that it's absurd that men are expected to wear bifurcated trousers even though the logistics would suggest a freer form of containment would be more appropriate. Especially in summer.

Saw a dude at the folk music festival in one of those. He was a soundman or other volunteer, rushing about with cables and the like. So all the pockets were eminently practical, and doubtless he kept cooler than the guys in (!) jeans.
