Someone mentioned in another thread that it freaks them out. I went on it as a teenager and people often had the same reaction. Why is this? Is there any research showing it to be more dangerous than the pill or other contraceptives?

Though I never plan on going back on any kind of birth control again, Depo seems so much more convenient than the pill or IUD, etc. Not to mention the added bonus of no periods or cramping!

I can't speak for others, but I find the idea of no periods very disturbing. That's the best indication that your birth control is working! But, some may like the idea. That's just my personal reason.

There is however a theory that historically from the onset of puberty until death the feral human female was either pregnant, or breast feeding so periods are an anolomy.

I'm not sure I subscribe to that but just threw it out for discussion.

A few years ago I read something similar to what you're talking about, Bleedingheart. The article said connections had been made between certain types of cancer and the vastly increased periods women now have. I wish I had something a little less vague to add to that!

Edited: I should have googled first.

Early Menstruation and Late Menopause -- Women who started menstrual periods early (before age 12) or went through menopause late (after age 55) are at higher risk. Also, women who have never had children or who had them only after the age of 30 have an increased risk.

Depo-provera freaks me out for the simple reason that when I was in vet school, we were told not to use it under any circumstances as a contraceptive in animals because it led pretty much directly to diabetes. Dogs and cats have a shorter life span, and their lives are so much more controlled, so stuff like this is easier to track.

But that in itself is a bad reason to freak out about it, since animals and humans react differently to various drugs (for instance, don't give cats Tylenol because their liver can't metabolize it - it's like poison for them)

When I finished school, one of my good friends told me she was on Depo-provera for a while and that she suspected it had created some health problems for her and exacerbated existing ones. Still, though, that's anecdotal and not a reason to freak out.

But I did a bit of googling on it from time to time - every time I heard of somebody who was on it. One site that gives some recent information on a link between Depo-provera and osteoporosis is this one

I just want to say that I'm absolutely pro-birth control, but I had some bad, scary experiences with the pill myself, and it's just another one of those territories you have to enter with caution, fully armed with as much knowledge as possible.

shaolin - have a hard time remembering the life history of all babblers - what is this about "not thinking you will go on birth control again"? Are you a woman who realised you were gay? Or a vow of chastity? I really don't understand otherwise.

I tend to agree about depo-provera but at the same time some of the scare stories on threads like this scare the wits out of me.

A co-worker recently got an administrative job with the regional stroke program.

Surprisingly she found that a significant number of her clients were women in their 20s on the BCP who smoked.

Scary. (But then so is pregnancy)

Lagatta - Well, neither and both really. I'm bisexual but my current partner is a man. I'm not chaste but I also don't particularly dig penetrative sex and feel there's a whole other world out there. And for the record, I'm not anti-birth control, I just don't like the idea of pumping my body full of hormones. Barrier methods are a-okay with me though.
