The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, has made a rare admission of failure by selling its hypermarket chain in Germany at a loss of $1bn (£530m) after failing to convert the country's shoppers and regulators to its low-price, American-style trading.

But the setback, which comes two months after a similar withdrawal from South Korea, is a blow to Wal-Mart's broader ambition to spread its phenomenally successful retailing format around the globe.

Isn't it nice to finally hear some good news?

It's nice to know that there are some places that are still somewhat immune to the kind of exploitative low-cost consumerism that seems to have gripped North America

Between this and Norway dumping all it's Walmart stock, this has been a good week for consumers!

Chicago (IL) made a ruling recently that certain large chain stores (Target is in there as well, but of course Walmart) need to pay a $10 minimum wage, along with a few other worker perks.

The critics (paid for by walmart of course) say that this is a huge blow to the area and the gov't has no right stepping in and playing union. I'll see if I can find some links on this

That's ok if the 10 dollar an hour minimum wage makes walmart uncompetitive then other stores will take their place.

The problem, of course, is that suburbs exist. You could just see Chicago residents go to the suburbs for these things then, which would indeed harm the region's economy.
