Labour MP Candy Atherton, accused of trying to dig up dirt on her gay opponent, insisted yesterday that she would never use "prejudice" to win an election. Right.

Atherton denied asking her gay researcher to collect incriminating personal info about her gay Tory rival saying she was "very upset and shocked." The allegation were made by her former gay employee Tom Phillips who is accusing Atherton of discrimination and harassment on the grounds of his sexual orientation.

Holy crap! This is the LABOUR Party?!

quote:
The MP admitted that some voters in Falmouth would disapprove of Mr Crossley's sexuality. But she insisted that she would never exploit that, adding ''I would not want any personal political gain because of other people's prejudice."

I echo queerday.com's editor, with a derisive, "Yeah... riiiiiiight!"

Trust her. Labour, while still rotten, is far less bad than Tory.

Sorry Newbie I can not accept the trust her attitude.

If the tables were reversed and a Brit Tory did this against a Labor candidate there would be hell to pay.

This stinks and where I come from if the poo stinks then it must be poo

edited to add: the smear campaigns that the political right has tried in Canada have failed partially due to the fact that we have not stood for them and allowed them to continue. Or at least without any outcry.

It is farcicle actions like these that water down our rightousness.

I'm not sure which of the camps this women's in but this is the style of politics coming from New Labour. Politics as marketing, do whatever you can to take the person down, don't worry about principles - they're "old" and "passé". I've seen so many clips of Labour politicians sounding exactly the same as Canadian Tories when it comes to policy. Nothing they could do would really surprise me anymore.

So WTF is "new" about appealing to chauvinism, prejudice and homophobia? If this is indicative of the Blairites (or "New" Labour in general), they deserve to be thrown out on their asses.

A friend of mine back east once told me, "I'd rather deal with one principled conservative than 100 sleazy, opportunistic bastards who simply call themselves social democrats because it's easier to get elected that way."

Amen.

They deserve to be thrown out on their asses for Iraq. This is just more proof that New Labour is old Tory.

There were a few, once upon a time. They pretty much were forced out when the Reformatories hijacked their party.
