Former Alberta meat-plant workers sue Tyson Foods

Kerry Williamson, CanWest News Service; Calgary Herald
Published: Friday, April 20, 2007

CALGARY - A group of former employees at a Brooks, Alta., meat-packing plant filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, alleging human rights abuses and wrongful dismissals leading up to their unionization.

The suit comes 18 months after the end of a bitter three-week strike at the Lakeside Packers plant that saw almost half the workforce - about 1,000 people - walk off the job.

It was filed this week by Calgary law firm Docken and Co., the same company that recently launched a lawsuit on behalf of pet owners affected by the North America-wide pet food recall.

Thanks for this info. I remember reading about that strike and the courage of the workers who stood up for themselves against the boss tyranny and demanded recognition.

I hope this case goes well for these people and that they get their jobs back (or at least the choice of going back) plus back pay, damages, expenses, etc.

It would be great--although likely too much to hope for--that the bosses get prosecuted for their acts of terror against various employees (threatening calls, spying on their homes, etc.).
