I convinced one lady to shut down her storage in calgary, and sell or transport the stuff.
Her payback time will be about a year and a half!
This thread is here to help design strategys to wean people off consumerism and storage of bought useless products.
I suggest heavy guilt trips for christian storers and for people with environmentalist leanings.
And what selfrespecting business person would tie up all the money in rent for non performing assets?
Help me find ways to attack all stages of storers syndrome! Lets break the mindless chain of thought that storers must indulge in.
Also we need storers anonymous tho help people keep clean after breaking the habit.

This is really not about banter. I'll move it to labour and consumption.

I never did see the point in renting a storage unit. Having a storage unit is a sure sign that you have bought WAY to much junk.

Unless you are moving or something.

Well, isn't that usually why? I've known people who, say, are between apartments, or are leaving the country for a year, or something like that, and they store their stuff in the meantime. Or, if they're going through a separation or divorce and have to live with someone else for a couple of months...

There are lots of reasons besides "bought too much junk" why someone might need a storage locker. But you're right, if someone is getting one merely because they have too much junk to store at their own place, getting rid of it is a good idea. But then, I think most people would do that on stuff they don't need rather than renting a locker for it.

It's usually why I would think.

But then there are people like me who have a garage full of things collected over the years that get very little or no use. So, I suppose I am guilty of hoarding

Or was, I took a truckload to recycling, a truckload to the salvation army and 3 loads to the dump (I just finished building a new house, most of that was construction debris).

I dont think people in other countrys have as much stuff in storage as canadians do.
I mean, some people spend $300 a month on storage!
For years! IN A DIFFERENT PROVINCE.
I think that is screwed up.
In victoria, I can go passed a massive storage village on the way to the ferry.
there is a massave storage building on old island highway. A couple on blanchard st.
These are a humungous weight on the economy.
If i belonged to the christian community, i would be preaching, give away your stored stuff, give your church 150 a month and pocket your savings.
Sotorag is reverse investing! If people put that money into stocks and shares at random, they would be pretty rich pretty quick!
And all that storage space could be released for
LOW INCOME HOUSING!
Seriously, it is one of the more screwed up aspects of canadian life. This extraordinary attachment to possessions that you will never see again. Take a picture of the damn thing.
Life rolls on.

I wonder how many homeless people have nowhere to put furniture and stuff that used to be in a heated building they were paying high rents and mortgages to live in ?. I think there are some Canadians( and many more Americans) who live in mobile vehicles of all sorts throughout the year.
