Some points presented in the Department of Defense's new quarterly report on Iraq, “Measuring Stability and Security in Iraq,” dated November 2006.

Civilians suffering from malnutrition range from 14 to 26 percent, depending on the province.

The numbers of refugees fleeing the violence are immense: 700,000 have fled to Jordan; 600,000 to Syria; 100,000 to Egypt; 40,000 to Lebanon, and 54,000 to Iran. Over 3,000 refugees per day are now appearing in Syria and Jordan.

In the last 10 months, 460,000 Iraqis have become “internally displaced” as they flee regional violence or are ethnically “cleansed.”

http://www.cdi.org/program/document.cfm?DocumentID=3768&from_page=../index.cfm

So there are 1.5 million Iraqi refugees outside the country and 0.5 million refugees inside? That around 7 or 8 percent of the population.

I sort of think that's news worthy. Has anyone seen that reported in the tradional news media?

Yes I have, and from an unexpected source... CNN actually ran these figures (on tv, not sure if online) in a discussion about moving forward in iraq (mind you, the information was being used to put a case together as far as why more American troops need to be there, but beside the point ).

Though that said... I think the media tends to jump on the 30k dead per month number and ignore the equally large displaced peoples figures

I think that its more convienient for the media to present us with information about the number of deaths as opposed to the number of refugees because there is nothing that can be done for the dead... the refugees on the other hand raise soo many different questions about what needs to be done to secure some level of human security to Iraqis citizens. This includes those who are internally displaced and those who are still in their homes.

I think this situation mirrors that of the citizens in afghanistan and palestine.

The U.N. has registered about 1.8 million palestinian refugees in Jordan (U.N. Source). So add to that another 0.7 million Iraqi refugees (DoD Source)for a total of 2.5 million refugees.

Jordan has a population of a little under 6 million. How the heck can they support that many refugees?

Oh, thanks for the imput that CNN did cover it somewhat.

This story is definitely being under-reported.

Does anyone know what the stance of various Western countries are in terms of accepting refugees and refugee claimants from Iraq?

The burden these displaced persons are placing on Iraq's neighbors is simply unacceptable, especially when Western countries - primarily the US and the UK - are creating this refugee crisis.
