Not exactly. But the text of the resolution passed by the senate today designating Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization could be used as a pretext for military intervention.

quote:

As foreign-affairs resolutions go, this was pretty strong language, and would set a dangerous precedent. As Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) said, “At best, it’s a deliberate attempt to divert attention from a failed diplomatic policy. At worst, it could be read as a backdoor method of gaining congressional validation for military action, without one hearing and without serious debate.” He added that Lieberman-Kyl “is Dick Cheney’s fondest pipe dream.”

. . . .

If the Senate is on board with this, and it clearly is, it’s hardly a stretch to think Bush could use this as cover to confront Iranian forces militarily under the guise of counter-terrorism.

Luckily, however, the "elected President of Iraq has now said that

quote:
Civil war has been averted in Iraq and Iranian intervention there has "ceased to exist," Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said yesterday.

So, no case can be made for using Iranian intervention in Iraq as a pretext for invasion.

... and "luckily" there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in 2003, either.

Sounds like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for pretexts. The chickenhawks must think "green" and learn to recycle. Will they meet themselves going? Maybe a subtext to the pretext will do.
