People in Bhopal are still living with the horrific effects of the world's worst industrial disaster (I think that means even worse than Chernobyl)...

http://www.labournet.net/events/0405/bhopal1.html This item also talks about the efforts by two women slum-dwellers to organise a trade union of Bhopal survivors

I read somewhere and although it apllies to Chernobyl I think that it applies to Bhopal as well.

The last of the victims of the disaster have not even been born yet.

Amnesty International issued a press release on Bhopal just a couple of days ago.
quote:
Twenty years on the Bhopal plant continues to ruin the lives of the surrounding communities. The effects of the leak and the contaminated environment continue seriously to affect people's basic human rights. A report by Amnesty International shows how companies and governments are evading their human rights responsibilities, and underlines the need for universal human rights standards for businesses.

"A generation on, survivors are still waiting for just compensation and adequate medical care," said Benedict Southworth, Campaigns Director at Amnesty International. "UCC -- and Dow who merged with UCC in 2001 -- have still not cleaned up the site or stopped pollution that started when the plant opened in the 1970s, meaning local residents are continuing to fall ill from drinking contaminated water."

More at the link, including a link to a PDF report.

They said on The Current today that Dow Chemicals bought out Union Carbide and that Dow is still refusing to say what exactly was in the gas, claiming it is a trade secret. And people continue to die.

The Toronto Star had a cover story in the World" section this past Saturday on some pretty nasty industrial pollution from chemical factories in the state of Kerala.

What's interesting is that unlike Bophal, many of these plants are state-owned.

I am probably in the minority among Babblers in that I was old enough to demonstrate against Union Carbide when this happened.

I clearly remember demonstrating outside of corporate headquarters here in Toronto (on Eglinton East, I think.) I also clearly remember that almost no one had a good word for us among passersby. They all preferred an unobstructed sidewalk to becoming knowledgeable about Bhopal.

Yes I too remember it keenly. Remember public meetings - not sure whether there was a demo here.

Here are some BBC pics of Bhopal survivors.

I remember it very well. and also remember, in the period following "9/11" comparing and constrasting the two and thinking about how much more "earth-shattering" and "history changing" were the lives of some 3,000 Americans as opposed to many more Indians.
