I saw this as a media release today on the CJC site:

CJC condemns cemetery desecration

Have not seen any mention in Canadian Press though saw it in a British newspaper this morning. Any further info anyone?

These asshats that commit such hate crimes are about as low as humanity sinks. We do spend much time criticizing CJC some legitimate criticism and some not . Here it should be commended for shining a light in a dark corner and for standing in solidarity with the Muslim community.

Well, there have certainly been reports in francophone media here, including on Radio-Canada. And obviously, lots in France itself.

Alas it isn't the first time it happened at the same location:

quote:

There was also a series of desecrations of both Muslim and Jewish cemeteries in Alsace - in that case it really was neo-Nazi skinheads, who had also attacked living people.

In the current case, I believe four youths were arrested but have been released. An investigation is still underway.

Oh dear, the racists even went to the trouble of leaving a butchered pig's head on the graves adorned with the word "halal", so I don't think it was just stupid kids. That stuff has a long history, from Reconquista-era Spaniards being suspected of secret Judaism or Islam if they didn't happen to be eating pork (a reason for the sprinkling of ham or lardons in many Spanish dishes) to the giant bas-relief of a pig outside the Frankfurt Jewish ghetto.

And the usual Celtic Crosses and Swastikas, and the now-popular "Fuck the prophet Muhammad" hate-speech...

I'll continue to follow this nasty story.

Thanks Lagatta, it seems that you and CJC are the only ones interested at this point.

That is probably because I have lived in France and travelled there many times, and follow French political and social news closely - especially antiracist stuff. Even in Québec media the story has certainly made both the papers and the electronic media.

I think a lot of the Sephardic people here have close ties to France as well, since there is such a huge community there (about half of the large French Jewish community).

The only "positive" thing about this horrible attack is that the pig's head and Nazi slogans pretty much rule out an intercommunitarian attack by Jewish Frenchpeople. The old fascist Jean-Marie Le Pen got his jollies (and hots) when there were racist attacks between Muslim-Arabs and Jews (usually also from the Maghreb). This really sounds like "classical" neo-Nazi type racists.

Edited to ad a truly positive aside: did you know that the beautiful Paris Mosque (the main one, obviously there are smaller ones) was built to honour the North African and West African troops who fought for France in the First World War?

The Mosque is well worth a visit. Tea and a tiny Maghrebi pastry in the garden transports visitors to somewhere across the Mediterranean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Mosque

If we all had the capacity to be right at least twice a day what a better world this would be!
