Afghan Warlord's Troops Take Remote City
quote: Troops loyal to ethnic Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum swept into Maymana, the center of Faryab province, 260 miles northwest of Kabul, on Thursday morning, Interior Minister Ali Ahmad Jalali said. ``Today, at 10 o'clock, militia troops loyal to General Dostum entered Maymana city,'' Jalali said. ``They have control of the city.''
This guy has won my grudging respect as possibly the least trustworthy person in politics of the lasy century. He is truly a marvel of the old pirate tradition that knows no friends but the loaded gun and the sword.

Sure. I want better than the warlords for Afghanistan; I honestly do -- but I cannot see that the USian intervention has done anything outside of Kabul but preserve a distorted, intensified version of the old power structures. Peoples need to find their own ways to progress and modernization, and in contact with an international community that genuinely wished to support that process, they would. But that's not what the international community is right now, and that's not what is going on in Afghanistan.

Afghan warlord's ultimatum to president quote: I will help with the national army and I should be trusted," he said. Gen Dostum, who has continued to push for a top position despite losing favour since helping United States forces topple the Taleban in 2001, called on the president, Hamid Karzai, to sack officials including the defence minister, Mohammad Qasim Fahim, and interior minister, Ali Ahmad Jalali. "If he does not, his government will fail," he said.
