Robert Badinter, former president of the French Constitutional Council, has joined the chorus of Frenchpersons (of Jewish, Arabo-Muslim and other backgrounds) speaking out against Sharon's urgent call for "Jews of France" to leave their homeland.

http://www.lemonde.fr/web/article/0,1-0@2-3224,36-373358,0.html

He said the call was offensive both to the millions of Muslims in France and to the Jewish Frenchpersons urged to leave their own country.

Another group protesting is "Une autre voix juive" (Another Jewish voice).

Oh, good. This discussion is in the right place this time.

lagatta, I don't know who these people are -- can you tell us more about any of them?

Sharon is such a cynic. I think it remains important to remember the forum he was speaking to: USian visitors.

He must have known, though, that he would get some reaction from the French, gentiles, Jews, Muslims, whatever. I wonder whether he quite anticipated the intensity of the anger.

I think Sharon should issue a call to American Jews to leave their country and come to the promised land, and see what kind of reaction he gets. It's not like there are no anti-semitic incidents happening in the US.

Yes; denigrating France while speaking to Yanks. France-bashing seems to be encouraged in the USA, and the French know it.

Sharon is trying to alienate Europe in American eyes.

Something that one doesn't often hear mentioned is that Europeans financed much of the infrastructure construction that went on in the Palestinian Authority. US-supplied weapons destroyed that infrastructure.

France and Europe aren't going to forget this very soon.

skdadl, I've heard of all those people but can't remember what they have all done offhand. Raymond Aubrac was a famous resistance fighter in Lyon. He was tortured by the infamous Klaus Barbie. A film was made based on his wife Lucie Aubrac's account of that time. Pierre Vidal-Naquet is a renowned historian - I believe he was also a Holocaust survivor. Alain Lipietz is an MEP with the Green Party, and Nicole Bernheim is a journalist and writer.

Yes, I did think it was worthwhile to point out that France is located in Europe, not the Middle East ...

My belle-mère and some of her fellow retired French transit drivers used to complain how Arabs would laugh as they got on buses, telling her they would eventually take over the country.

She'd react as if she'd hit a brick wall whenever we'd go into the Algerian section of her local outdoor market.

Bah. French, Arab; ce sont kif kif pareil.

Here is a statement by L'Union juive française pour la paix: "Les juifs français sont ménacés... par Sharon!" (French Jews are menaced (or threatened) ... by Sharon!)

Yeah Al Q, good you can chuckle about attitudes like your belle-mère's. And yet even the Front national holds méchouis now.
