Opera Giving Away Browser For Free

quote:
OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian Web browser provider Opera Software has stopped charging users and ditched ads to focus on expanding its customer base and boosting revenue from Internet searches, it said on Tuesday.

The news sent its stock up more than 8 percent.

Scrapping banner ads and user fees, which accounted for 55 percent of desktop browser revenue in the first half, for a free service which pulls in cash from Internet searches using Google, Ebay.com and Amazon.com will hurt profits this year, Opera said.

I put this in here because I want to highlight the amazon.com-like absurdity of this entire scenario.

A compabny gives up its revenue source, admits this will hurt revenues, and yet, its stock price goes up. The final insanity of the paper economy has come home to roost wherein a company's "fundamentals" become completely disconnected from its stock performance.

Ladies and gentlemen, cash your chips and place your bets, Opera hits the roulette wheel!

Maybe ( ) the idea is to provide the free browser with no ads, get people hooked, and then the bring back the ads or charge for it. Like the crack dealer that gives the first few hits for free.

Crazy isn't it? One wonders when sanity will catch up with us.

BTW, I use Opera most of the time. Every month or so, I try Firefox, but I keep coming back to Opera.

Now its free? Funny, I always assumed it was free.

I tried IE 64-bit edition, and since it sucked just as much as the normal edition, I went back to firefox (which will never leave me again)

On a completely unrelated note, babble needs more smilies.

What babble needs more than anything else is the textarea enlarged. It is so stupid to have to try and communicate with people in this tiny little window. Comeon admins, fix this silliness.

The "ad-sponsored" version has always been free. If you wanted a version without the ad, it would cost you $40 U.S.

I never really found the ad all that irritating.
