As well you should be given your need to dominate discussion which has nothing to do with you. GV: quote: Originally posted by George Victor: When one of the people involved in piling on old downtime admits that, perhaps, they were being, maybe, just a tad insensitive to what another human being was trying to express - and being really tribal about it (ganging up on the guy, and not one voice challenging the others) - I'll know that I'm corresponding with people who take their expressions of sensitivity beyond semantics. ... And Makwa, as one who has enjoyed many a meal of muskrat (spring) and frogs legs, may I suggest that you stray into the world of tic-mo with your injured sensibility?
You had to throw the 'tribal' shit out again didn't you, after my expression, of my dismay, which I though was reasonably polite, and which was even followed by regret over my mild satire? You just couldn't resist, no matter what?I don't give a flying fuck how many rats, toads and other vermin you have consumed, nor do I give a damn about the 'world of tic-mo' whatever that is. Such claims do not make you 'down with the people' as much as you may fantasize it otherwise. Please be advised that from now on you may not post in the FN nor anti-racist forum while I mod. Do I make myself clear?

Quite right you are SJ, on all counts, but I must admit I am fond of Mr. Gouda's Red Pepper Sauce to get the bad taste out of my mouth. Peace. As an aside, I am pleased to see that the Mr. Gouda co. has teamed up with the local Billy Bee in some of their tasty products. I am a big fan of the Billy Bee not merely because of the grade school visits to the local cannery (whereby I declared that I wanted to be a Billy Bee packager when I grew up, because it looked like such fun), nor because I insisted on reading the Billy Bee storybook for storytime, much to the sneering dismay of the substitute teacher, but because my much loved English granny had a Billy Bee coin bank which fascinated me as a wee lad, as it were. 'Twas so adorable, like a little hive, with a few tiny ceramic bees bouncing about on little springs on the side. Sigh. Enough tribulation, we have many more important issues to vex ourselves with. Thank you SJ for the much needed perspective. Meegwetch. [ 10 October 2008: Message edited by: Makwa ]

[Quote edited to contain those passages I wish to address] I realize that I am running the risk of getting into the middle of someone else's pissing match, but what the hey, I'm doing laundry today anyway... Makwa, one of the fallback tropes of the xenophobe is to accuse the "other" of eating disgusting things. Give the intensity of your reaction to the use of the word "tribal" in the previous thread, you should have given some thought as to whether you were being baited into using a response that was demonstrating xenophobia on your part -- if that was GV's intent (and I do not know what the actual intention was), it may have been successful -- the use of the term vermin was questionable at best. As to the territorial display (I also thought about describing it as chest beating or penis waving -- I want to be clear that I disapprove, but decided I didn't want my disapproval to be discounted because it was phrased in stereotypical gender terms so settled on the above as a compromise, albeit with problems of its own) by the overt threat of preventing someone from posting if and when you had the ability to do so, I can only respond by saying you were clear, but I am not impressed the ease with which you slip into an authoritarian role.

You're welcome. In case you're wondering, yes, I had to google meegwetch. I live a five minute walk from where a similar language is spoken, and I had to google it, which in itself suggests that I could do with a walk every now and then. The first time could have been perceived as such, and the second time in itself could have justifibly bought about some degree of concern as to the original intent. Someone directly affected by it would know better, I could only imagine. It seemed to me at least, through those references to culinary sterotypes, all doubt was removed. But hey, there's a nifty sounding handle..Makwa the Authoritarian. ETA: Ooops, there's an obvious one..sry bout that mate. [ 10 October 2008: Message edited by: Slumberjack ]

Makwa, you surprise me sometimes with your willingness to think. As the Brits (purportedly) say: "Respect!"

Moderators volunteer or get minimally paid to make judgement calls. If they were to debate even a fraction of the time people want to question said judgement calls, the time drain would be impossible and they would have no choice but to quit. Guess what it would be like around here with no judgement calls, instead of judgement calls that might at times be less than perfect. [Leaving aside relevant but secondary questions such as whether having more perfect judgements would be feasible even if more time were invested, whether the mod judgements that are objected to tend to be the ones that were 'less than perfect', etc.]
