Okay, I take something back I said at an earlier time - it seems professional companies do actually do this.

quote:
RadioShack Corp. notified about 400 workers by e-mail that they were being dismissed immediately as part of planned job cuts.

Employees at the Fort Worth headquarters got messages Tuesday morning saying: "The work force reduction notification is currently in progress. Unfortunately your position is one that has been eliminated."

Nice.

That reminds me of a recent "pamphlet" that was issued to Northwest Airline employees who were going to be laid off. Among the many gems, as advice to make a go of it after being laid off, that the pamphlet included was (something to the effect): "It's not shameful to look in dumpsters for items that may be useful to you". Another one was (something like): "You can save money by cutting your own hair".

Radio Shak is such a terrible company anyway, huge rip offs. Possibly these layoffs are the first in a series towards the eventual collapse of the company.

How rude of them though, human resources totally doesn't get human relations.

Yeah, what kind of employer would do a thing like that? Seems pretty heartless to me.

Since I mentioned it on another board I will mention it here as well:

quote:
CBC story: Company officials had told employees in a series of meetings that layoff notices would be delivered electronically, spokeswoman Kay Jackson said. She said employees were invited to ask questions before Tuesday's notification on a company intranet site.

So, RadioShack may have been just cheap and unwilling to pay the cost of postage or Registered Mail to send the same notice some other way.

----------------------------------

I suppose it's rather doubtful that anyone reading this thread DOESN'T know this, but - on the grounds that a newbie might not know - a previous moderator of babble was given an e mail notice of dismissal/layoff. The dismissal was divisive and controversial. Many posters, including some outstanding ones that are missed, left this board, started their own new board(s), and did not return to babble. [sincere sniff follows.]

I mention this because this thread could easily fly madly off in all directions for what would seem like inexplicable reasons to a newcomer or someone not familliar with the history. Sometimes there's more to "solidarity" than meets the eye.

I've never liked Radio Shack, except they sell the best portable telephone amplifier for the hearing impaired.

In Canada Radio Shack is now officially The Source by Circuit City. Seems there was a copy right problem when the chain was sold to Circuit City. All the blister backs with Radio Shack had to be removed from the shelves and replaced with other brand names. Differnt name, same cheap shit.

Yes, it is. Terminations are also the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my career. I tossed and turned the night before in bed, had bad dreams, and so on. However, nothing justifies this "termination by e-mail" nonsense. It is depersonalizing and basically ignores the fact that these are real people with real aspirations that are suddenly without a livelihood.
