Did anyone watch the Olympic coverage last night? I did (for the second time...convincing myself that twice was too many) and was treated to this gem by Brian Williams, immediately after the CBC showed the three winning hammer throws by the women competing in that event (paraphrasing):

Women's hammer throw? It seems to me that the Olympics are getting too big. There's always discussion about shrinking the Olympics, but they keep adding new sports every year. Is is just me, or does the women's hammer throw seem a bit ridiculous?

It is just you, Brian. This is the sort of event that there should be more of...women's traditional track and field sports. There should be a women's decathelon and a steeplechase race. Only recently have pole vaulting and shot putting been added to the field sports for women. If Mr. Williams wants to find events to eliminate, look to the events which rely solely on judging, not the speed /distance events.

I echo you, Briguy: It's just you, Brian -- and that's as in Williams, not as in our Briguy.

What a dork.

I mean that Bri, Bri. Whew.

I wish I could find the original quote. My paraphrase doesn't do justice to the thoughtlessness of the original.

My mother had the displeasure of sitting behind Brian "I'm a reptilian motherfucker" Williams for an 8 hour flight from London to Toronto.

Two things struck her about him:

1) He couldn't shut up pontificating on every sports subject under the sun. FOR 8 HOURS!

2) His skin is highly scaly (probably due to the tv makeup) just like the reptile he is.

Sorry couldn't avoid the chance to slag Brian Williams.

I'm wondering about the link to feminism.

The link: The effluent Mr. Williams specifically targetted the women's hammer throw as an event to eliminate. Knowing him, he did not mean to include both the men's and women's events as ridiculous, but only the women's. Seemed kinda sexist to me, is all.

Yet another reason not to watch the olympics. As if I needed another one.

I watched this too and the first thing that I thought when I heard him say "maybe women's hammer throw is a bit too much" (I believe the emphasis was his) was just how sexist that sounded.

He is a reptillian turd. I loath everything about him and always have.

The worst thing is the way he leans into the camera and gives that " now I'm going to explain this very slowly so even you know nothing morons back in Canada can understand what's going on".

The best thing is, I'm off work during the Olympics and can catch the events as they happen during the course of the day. By the time Williams shows up in prime time I've already seen everything I want to. His show is irrelevant and I have mercifully been able to give it a pass. For me this has been a mostly Williams-free Olympics. Woo hoo.

There is some story about Wilson as told by Cherry on those 100 years of sports in Canada videos I own. I can't remember is all but I guess Wilson said something dumb during the coverage of hockey or something and he thought he was going to get slapped around by an angry mob -- or whatever. Didn't sound like Cherry has much use for Wilson either.

Wow... Don Cherry being cited in the "feminism" forum— and as an accuser of someone, instead of being brought up as an object of scorn and derision in his own right! Don Cherry!!! in the feminism forum!!!

Just imagine for a second that you didn't already know who Brian Williams was, and that all you had to go on was your knowledge of Cherry. This one little thing alone— that Cherry's wooden-headedness, bombast, bigotry, and sexism were being overlooked, and that he was being used in the feminism forum to castigate Brian Williams.... that, in and of itself, should demonstrate what an utter tool Williams is.

You'd never hear Danny Gallivan making a lamebrain comment like that!!

Well, not really. By definition, isn't a tool useful?

Williams evokes the same kind of feelings that the former PM Mulroney evokes. He makes my skin crawl. But the good thing is...that he helps me to watch less TV. Hooray for jerks that make my skin crawl!
