I'm glad you added the final sentence. People concerned with the mistreatment of our beastie friends are not less concerned with humain rights, far from it.A couple of years ago a cat nazi stalked a neighbourhood near mine, capturing, torturing and murdering pussycats. A ritual murder of a dog on the mountain may or may not have been a coincidence. The people involved in fighting this outrage included many involved in women's rights, refugee rights and other human rights issues. The other point of the story is how it galvanised people by making them realise how idiotic "honour killings" were.

There's a fascinating documentary about honour killings on Vision if it ever repeats. Besides talking about the practice, and the nominal punishement that brothers and uncles get for it, it also profiles women who KNOW that they're going to be killed by a male family member, and the state's response: put them in jail. Apparently it's the only place they're liable to be safe. It seems the brothers and uncles are often more than happy to accept a prison sentence for murder, so long as they are able to "preserve" their family's honour, so prevention using the usual legal coercions is difficult if not impossible. Is it OK to say "fucked" on this messageboard? Because this whole situation is just that.
