This tale of macho stupidity is a cruel one for animal lovers...

That's crazy. I'm sure the dog had so much to do with it!

24 Honor killings in Jordan each year, and we're discussing a dog? Forgive me if I seem heartless, but I think there's a more meaningful story here. Oh say - the fact that this dog likely got more press in that one story than the "24" women combined...

All the same. Poor dog.

I'm glad you added the final sentence. People concerned with the mistreatment of our beastie friends are not less concerned with humain rights, far from it.

A couple of years ago a cat nazi stalked a neighbourhood near mine, capturing, torturing and murdering pussycats. A ritual murder of a dog on the mountain may or may not have been a coincidence.

The people involved in fighting this outrage included many involved in women's rights, refugee rights and other human rights issues.

The other point of the story is how it galvanised people by making them realise how idiotic "honour killings" were.

Perhaps in "official" figures. This vicious practice occurs far more often than that throughout the region. There were at least a few a week when I was over there. This is what a genuine, hard-core patriarchy looks like.

There's a fascinating documentary about honour killings on Vision if it ever repeats. Besides talking about the practice, and the nominal punishement that brothers and uncles get for it, it also profiles women who KNOW that they're going to be killed by a male family member, and the state's response: put them in jail.

Apparently it's the only place they're liable to be safe. It seems the brothers and uncles are often more than happy to accept a prison sentence for murder, so long as they are able to "preserve" their family's honour, so prevention using the usual legal coercions is difficult if not impossible.

Is it OK to say "fucked" on this messageboard? Because this whole situation is just that.
