If you're laid off then your life expectancy just got shorter.

Ain't capitalism grand?

ETA: I forgot to add the following information:

quote:
Roughly one million Canadians are permanently laid off from their jobs every year.

I'm sure that the Capitalist system shares much of the guilt, but what of those workers who live only for the job?

I couldn't retire soon enough and welcomed giving a younger worker a chance.

You mean those workers putting in everything they have into their job(s) because they're trying to stay afloat?

One thing to note is that this is an American study. People without jobs in the US are also often without health insurance, so it doesn't surprise me that layoffs would have a negative impact on their health at all. I wonder what the impacts would be compared between Canada and the US.

Lay-offs often come with advance notice. The situation must be much worse for those who are unjustly dismissed, fired without warning, bullied in the workplace - numbers I believe that are much higher than the number of laid-off workers.

And in the U.S. at least there is greater access to justice (large court awards, class actions, contingency legal arrangements where victims are not forced to pay $300/hour upfront for representation). In Canada awards in labour cases are pathetically small by comparison, and often less than the costs of legal fees that Canadian lawyers demand upfront).

Economists have come to admit there are valid alternatives to flexible labour markets.

If you can afford the exorbitant legal fees and have several years to wait, sure.

According to Michael Moore's Sicko movie, losing your job in the States can be bad for your health. Over-bloated insurance companies practically want a hand-written note from Elvis vouching for your excellent health before they'll cover you. And even then it's not a sure thing.
