MINCO, Okla. -- One of Oklahoma's nominees for state superintendent of education has proposed a unique idea for protecting students from outbreaks of violence.

Bill Crozier, a Union City Republican going against incumbent Democrat Sandy Garrett, said he believes old textbooks could be used to stop bullets shot from weapons wielded by school intruders.

If elected, he said he would put thick used textbooks under every desk for students to use in self-defense.

Read it here.

That is not a bad idea.

I think with a little practice those students could protect themselves (and learn history at the same time) using the "turtle" formation used by the roman military.

Shown at the bottom of the page here: Turtle formation

Ummm...

Crozier's experiment began with shots fired at a calculus textbook from an AK-47 Russian-style assault rifle. The shot penetrated two textbooks at once...Crozier said he believes his test was not scientific.

I don't even know how to address this. I live in fear that this will only increase the already inflated prices of school textbooks.

Maybe the Gap will jump all over this and start their Fall/Winter Kevlar collection for kids. With the purchase of two items, you get a fifty dollar rebate on a PSP and the new 50 cent game.

Heh, this is too funny. I'd say false sense of security, but anyone trying to hide behind a text book probably isn't feeling all too secure. Think it'll work? Lets get this republican to hold a text book while we fire some potshots at him ^^ Perhaps a better test would be to send him out birdhunting with Cheney and a text book.

Sadly, I think this first time I've heard 'putting text books into schools' as an election issue in the states. Progess?

I've been giggling for about 30 seconds straight over that mental image. "Okay kiddies, let's do the crazy gunman drill! Textbooks! Formation!"

Are we sure they didn't spell the candidate's name wrong, substituting the correct "a" for an "o"?
