It's been a long time since Stalin sat turning the globe in his hands. Ukrainians are somewhat akin to Canadians, as we deal with the US.

The election race has been exceptionally dirty, even by East European standards. Candidates and their families have reportedly been threatened, journalists intimidated. The national media -- controlled by Kuchma and his allies -- has shamelessly promoted Yanukovych. There are complaints of voter lists and registration forms being corrupted or destroyed.

The Bush administration has backed the Moscow-oriented Kuchma-Yanukovych side, lavishing tens of millions in official aid and on government officials in return for Ukraine sending troops to Iraq. (This seems to have put an end to Washington's previous complaints about the Kuchma government's human rights violations and corruption.)

And Vladimir has to deal with Chechnya and Iran, the beneficiary of Russian (Soviet), nuclear exports.

Do you think he's starting to sweat, just a little bit?

Whither Ukraine?
